More Taxes, Progressive and Regressive

Tomorrow’s hearings in Annapolis cover the heart of the Governor’s tax proposals – the increased sales tax, income tax restructuring, property tax reduction and increased tobacco tax.  A draft of the tax reform legislation can be found here.

The sales tax proposal is pretty simple – an increase in the general sales tax rate [...]

The Special Session Begins…

The special session of the Maryland Legislature began last night with a speech by the Governor.  The real work begins today with joint hearings on the Governor’s proposed budget solutions and the alternative spending cuts proposed by the Governor as ‘the cost of delay’.  It will be seen whether the Governor can persuade the [...]

Campaign Money – Part Four

Today we’ll take a look at the finance reports of Democratic candidates for Congress in Maryland’s first congressional district.

Frank Kratovil

Frank Kratovil from Queen Anne’s County reports raising $164,262 through September 30.  The Federal Election Commission (FEC) summary page shows $3,200 in PAC contributions, but none appear on the detail pages.  I suspect there’s a [...]

Slots on the Eastern Shore?

On Friday, Governor O’Malley proposed a referendum on slots that would allow up to 15,000 machines in five Maryland locations.  The legislation, which appears likely to pass during the special session calls for a referendum in November 2008.  The referendum would put slots at five locations:

Allegheny County, on state property near the Rocky Gap [...]

Campaign Money – Part Three

Today we’ll take a quick look at the campaign contributions of Wayne Gilchrest, the Republican incumbent from Maryland’s first district.  According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) website, Congressman Gilchrest has reported raising a total of $174,134 – significantly less than his primary opponent, Andy Harris.  Both, however, are reporting cash on hand at [...]

Campaign Money – Part Two

We’re going to look at the campaign contributions to the various candidates for Congress in Maryland’s first district.  I’ll start with the Republicans, since there’s a lot more money there.  I’ll start with Andy Harris and try to get to Wayne Gilchrest later today or tomorrow.  I’m working with data from the Federal Election [...]

SCHIP Rides Again

I hear from a couple of places that there’s going to be another SCHIP vote on Thursday (Oct. 24).  The revised legislation will contain a few changes from the bill that was vetoed earlier:

an explicit prohibition on benefits for illegal immigrants
a one year phase-out of adults in the program as opposed to [...]

Tax Time!

There are lots of news items about the Governor’s tax and slots proposals as the legislature prepares to meet in special session beginning Monday.  Dueling polls have been released on the Governor’s proposals and the Governor himself.  The first poll shows that 46% approve of the job Governor O’Malley is doing.  A full 60% [...]
