The Eastern Shore of Maryland is slowly sinking. Scientists tell us that the land is subsiding at a rate of about 1.3 millimeters a year. In addition, the sea level is rising at a rate of about 3 millimeters a year. Together, given that the highest point on the Lower Eastern Shore is less than 50 feet above sea level, this means that all of us here are slowly sinking into the sea.
Until that happens, though, there is plenty of time to enjoy the various pleasures of The Shore – the sun, the sand, our plentiful bays, rivers, coves, marshes and creeks, the funloving and friendly people who live here and the weird and wonderful politics of The Shore.
I’ll be posting observations here on all of the above, with an emphasis on the politics of the Eastern Shore and Maryland in general. Please feel free to drop me a line or share a comment or two. Thank you for reading.
